THE ITALIAN HIGHER EDUCATION SYSTEM
Italy describes its higher education system in terms of three ‘cycles’, namely undergraduate degrees, master’s degrees and doctorates.
First Cycle or the Bachelor’s Degree: This is the initial stage of higher education in Italy. The main focus during the first cycle is to introduce a student to the basics of different fields of education. This cycle lasts for 3 years and is worth 180 credits. It requires one to show a high-school diploma or an equivalent to be eligible for admission.
Second Cycle or the Master’s Degree: The second cycle of the Italian education system is the Master’s degree where one specializes in a particular subject of their choice through theoretically advanced and applied learning. This cycle usually accounts for 120 credits and the duration is of 2 years. In order to be eligible for the Master’s degree, one needs to have a Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent.
Third Cycle or the PhD: The third cycle is the Doctorate phase and one needs to have a Master’s Degree to be eligible for this programme. The other requirement is an entrance test that one needs to clear to be admitted. This phase lasts for three years. The students are required to conduct thorough research about one specific area of a subject and a dissertation based on their chosen topic.
The academic year is split into two semesters, from September/October to January/February, and from February to July consisting of 14 teaching weeks followed by a six- week exam period. Most exams are taken orally, i.e., a one-on-one question and answer session with a professor.
